My Approach
The Veterinarians of the ANZCVS Veterinary Behaviour Chapter are those with a specific interest and high level of expertise in the field of animal behaviour and veterinary behavioural medicine.
We are the first port of call for owners who have animals with general behavioural issues. We are also able to to diagnose and formulate a treatment plan for animals who suffer from mental health disorders. Mental health disorders are the underlying cause for more complex behaviour problems, such as maladaptive fears and anxiety, reactivity, aggression and obsessive-compulsive behaviour. These are behaviour problems are not due to lack of training, but instead can reflect an underlying medical diagnosis that needs appropriate management and treatment.
For example, our veterinarians treat cases of noise sensitivity, separation anxiety, tail chasing, excessive barking, feather damaging disorder, cribbing, flank sucking, pacing, dementia, house soiling, and more. Following diagnosis, a treatment plan can be formulated, which involves treatment environmental management, behaviour modification, and appropriate medication (if indicated depending on the diagnosis).
“Improve your ability to help your clients better understand their pets’ behaviour and learn to best manage anxiety, aggression and other common behavioural problems. Discover the latest updates in behavioural pharmacology – the when, why and which of medications.”
